Paddy/ Rice Straw once pre-treated to suitable physical & chemical composition is subjected to advanced anaerobic digestion (co-digestion) in an all-weather Continous stirrer type reactor capable of handling high solid contents of lower Density/Sp. Gravity.

The uniqueness lies in controlling process parameters to get the best yields especially in the first few days of feeding when acidogenesis and acetogenesis are dominant. The continuous process will be controlled with both online & lab scale monitoring techniques and adjustment of various parameter.

This Project will Integrate the agri-business aspects in Punjab and will address the contempt of court orders on Paddy/ Rice Straw burning to some extent as well as address the problems of water logging, salinity, unemployment etc. & has the following additional benefits:

  • Providing a solution for farmers in utilising the Paddy/ Rice Straw with added income source.
  • Providing viable venture to Entrepreneurs to produce BioCNG fuel.
  • Bio compost to benefit environment.
  • A stream of environmentally bi products like Food grade BioCO2, Nutrient rich slurry, etc.

Project Technology

The project will be based upon Circular Economy Model with 1 MW equivalent capacity for 12000/5 MT Cum/day biogas generation from Paddy/ Rice Straw which is a lignocellulosic Agriculture waste. The biogas cycle is depicted as under:-

The state of the art Process Methodology / technology involved in the project is multi- dimensional Pre-treatment of Paddy/ Rice Straw followed by advanced anaerobic digestion, Bio Gas storage, stripping (purification) of Biogas, Purify to attain Bio Methane (BioCNG) of upto 99.5%. purity and recovery of BioCo2 of food grade quality (99.99% purity) along with valuable bi- products like Bio Compost, Nutrient rich Slurry etc.

Punjab being the leading state of India in Paddy crop cultivation & harvesting record yields makes it an obvious starting point for setting up the project. One acre of Paddy crop land produces on average 1.5 tons of Paddy/ Rice Straw. Punjab alone produces 16 to 20 million tons of Paddy/ Rice Straw per annum which is surplus for disposal. The district wise data of rice straw for a typical year is given in the table below:

Waste Sugarcane Bagasse

Further, One ton of process able Paddy/ Rice Straw can produce up to 200-250 say 225 cum biogas by advanced anaerobic digestion technology which is equivalent to 100 kgs of BioCNG.
